When I first opened the little green tub of Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado,
I didn’t get the hype.
It looked a bit like guacamole, felt thick and waxy, and when I rubbed it under my eyes, it sat there like an oil slick. At around £30 for a 14 ml pot, I was ready to banish it to the back of the bathroom cabinet.
Then I discovered something slightly annoying: I had been using it completely wrong.
It turns out this isn’t a regular eye cream you can just swipe on and run out the door. It has an actual learning curve – and once you understand how to break the formula, it completely transforms.

The Secret: The “Breaking Formula”
Why does Kiehl’s Avocado Eye Cream behave so strangely?
It’s formulated as a water-in-oil emulsion. Straight out of the jar, the texture is dense and heavy. But when you warm it between your ring fingers, friction causes the emulsion to “break” – transforming the thick cream into a lightweight, burst-of-water texture that absorbs effortlessly into delicate skin.
If you apply it straight from the jar without breaking it first, you trap that dense oil barrier right on top of your skin.
To make it work, the formula requires friction and warmth to “break” before it ever touches your face.
Sounds simple on paper, but seeing the texture actually “break” is where it clicks.
